We are the Middle Georgia Democratic Socialists of America, and within less than a year of forming we were the largest activist organization in the region. Here's how we did it:
We were founded following the 2024 presidential election. After seeing Kamala Harris' historic loss we knew that something had to change in our community. People are fed up with a system that has failed working people. Before us, there simply was not a space for people to express those grievances, and work towards a world that serves the average person, not just the billionaire class.
Working class issues are the cornerstone of DSA's movement. Affordable housing, cheaper groceries, living wages, and full employment are central tenets of our platform.
Which is why we decided to start by supporting striking union workers. The first thing we ever did as a chapter was go to non-union Starbucks in our community and speak to them about the strike that was going on. As a result, the Starbucks workers in Bonaire decided to authorize a union election!
Since then, our chapter has worked to better the lives of working people directly through our free meal initiatives.
Very early on we were holding food drives, and began making sandwiches every Thursday to fill the community fridges. We started with just a couple people making 40-60 meals each week, but now boast an average of 500 each week.
It is vital that we not only aid people directly with our work, but that we also make the government do the same. After sponsoring a protest outside of the Macon-Bibb county jail, concessions were immediately made by the local government to release hundreds of people, largely Black Americans, charged with non-violent crimes. There is still much more work to be done to ensue equal treatment of Macon's minority communities, but this shows that when we make our voice heard people in power listen.
It is not enough just to protest and make appeals from outside of the government however, which is why our chapter has helped win elections across the country!
From notable DSA candidates like Zohran Mamdani, to Georgia's very own Kelsea Bond, we're winning elections everywhere, blue state or red.
Through our focus on working class issues, and by immediately putting those ideas into practice, we rapidly expanded into becoming the largest activist organization in Middle Georgia. This is massive for an explicitly anti-capitalist, socialist organization in the deep south, but it shouldn't be too unexpected.
People have always known that the ruling class does not serve them, but only recently through the examples of people like Bernie Sanders, and Zohran Mamdani are they starting to believe in a better world. A world where we are guaranteed a living wage, healthcare, and equal treatment under the law. A world where working people control the course of the nation. A world we'd feel proud to send our children into. A better world is possible within our lifetimes, but it's up to us to fight for it!
The time where billionaires can walk all over us without consequence will end. Our time is now! If you believe in building towards a better world then come and build it with us!
